A/Prof Tony Kenna is a cellular immunologist and Principal Research Fellow at Queensland University of Technology. His research career has focused on human immunology and identification of novel therapeutic approaches for treatment of immune-mediated diseases such as ankylosing spondylitis and systemic sclerosis. These are heritable diseases, telling us that genetics plays an important role in their pathogenesis. Recent genome-wide association studies in systemic sclerosis have identified several genes that increase susceptibility to developing disease. A/Prof Kenna’s group has used functional genomic approaches to identify which of these genes may provide new therapeutic targets.
